On the eve of his comeback, Michael Schumacher admits he may not win Sunday's opening race of the 2010 Formula One campaign, but expects to be in contention for an eighth world title at season's end. Britain's Jenson Button will be bidding to defend the crown he won in 2009, but all eyes will be on the return of seven-times Schumacher when the 41-year-old ends his three-year hiatus at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Having signed a three-year deal with German team Mercedes GP before Christmas, Schumacher will be reunited with team principal Ross Brawn, who oversaw all of the Germans' world titles. But after such a long break away from Formula One, Schumacher faces the new crop of drivers in Britain's Lewis Hamilton and Button at McLaren, while Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel will also give his compatriot a run for his money. After Brawn GP won the manufacturer's championship in 2009 before Mercedes took control, Button's defection to McLaren in the off-season paved the way for Schumacher's return. Expectation of another title is high in his home country, but Schumacher expects to be judged on the final standings at the end of the season, not on Sunday's results. "I said it quite clearly from the beginning: we do not have to - and probably will not - be in the position to win right from the start," Schumacher said. "It is important to be in contention and then use the long season to be at the top at the end. "It is not the start which is important; it is the finish." Vettel has said all of Formula One's current young guns are eager to prove themselves against someone of Schumacher's stature. "For the younger drivers, it is a challenge (to have Schumacher racing again), because we never thought we would have a chance to test ourselves against him again," said Vettel. "From a statistical point of view, he is the best." Schumacher nearly returned last year with his old stable Ferrari as a replacement for the injured Felipe Massa, but an old neck injury from motorbik

3 Vote(s)

Bring on the electric prancing horse. Ferrari is taking its promise to introduce its first green car literally and its fans are trying their best to adjust. The car that’s synonymous with speed, style and red has rolled out a prototype hybrid at the Geneva Auto Show that’s clean and green. “Are we excited about the possibility of an electrified Ferrari? In a word, no,” opines U.S. car bible Car and Driver. “If it sells well enough to help fund the development of real Ferraris, we’ll begrudgingly accept the hybrid.” The Ferrari 599 GTB lacks the car’s trademark starting roar but does go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds.“The world’s most iconic sports car marque, known for screaming V-8s and V-12s, is playing around with the gas-electric technology epitomized by the Toyota Prius,” says Automobile mag’s Eric Tingwall. Then he sighs, “Hybridization or electrification of the Prancing Horse is inevitable.” It does indeed, as rumoured, integrate technology from Ferrari’s Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which was developed for the 2009 Formula 1 season. The future is three to five years away, but the bravado has already arrived. “We absolutely think ahead of everybody in technology research,” Matteo Sardi, a Ferrari North America spokesman, was quoted as saying in the New York Times. “Attitudes are changing and we build cars for customers,” said Ferrari chief executive Amedeo Felisa. Not to mention European Union car emissions standards. Ferrari has also had to confront the competition. Tesla Motors two years ago introduced its all-electric Roadster sports car which now, in its Sport version, boasts a 0-to-60 time of 3.7 seconds. As HIS Global Insight analyst Aaron Bragman said, “Tesla proves electric cars are going to be a blast to drive.” For the moment, Ferrari fans seems more concerned about the paint than the power.

3 Vote(s)

Canadian welterweight Claude Patrick is headed to the UFC. Patrick made the announcement of his signing on "The Fight Show with Mauro Ranallo." The former IFL fighter will make his UFC debut at UFC 115 in Vancouver, according to a report on MMAjunkie.com. The Mississauga, Ontario native, who trains with fellow Canadian UFC fighter Marck Bocek, is coming off a submission win over Matt McGraith at Aggression MMA in Edmonton, Alberta. Patrick isn't the only Canadian being lined up for the Vancouver card, as Kelowna, B.C. native Rory MacDonald (10-0) will likely put his undefeated record on the line against former WEC champion Carlos Condit. There have been no official announcements regarding UFC 115, but the coaches for Season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, are expected to be part of the main event at GM Place. In addition, Japanese star Yoshihiro Akiyama is rumoured to potentially face Wanderlei Silva, while a pair of heavyweight bouts could see Ben Rothwell take on Gilbert Yvel, and Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic battle Pat Barry.

3 Vote(s)

Thanks to a new generation of analysts, baseball and math has never been so intertwined. Bill James and the Society for American Baseball Research, or the more familiar term, sabermetrics, the American pastime have been overrun by math geeks, according to Iowa State University. Ten years ago, James, now a senior advisor for the Boston Red Sox, wrote a formula to show which teams would be winners and which would be also-rans. Basically, the formula uses the number of runs scored per game and runs given up per game to estimate a team's winning percentage. Kerry Whisnant, an Iowa State physicist, has taken this formula a step further by taking into consideration run distribution. He'll be talking about it this weekend at MIT's Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.Simply, does a team that scores runs in bunches have a better chance of winning than a team that scores on a more consistent basis? Whisnant took into account a team’s slugging percentage (total bases divided by at bats) and it’s RPG. He concluded that a team with a higher SLG had a narrower run distribution (scored more consistently.) If you take two teams with the same RPG, a team with a SLG of .080 higher will average one more win per year. If that same team’s pitching/defense RPG was the same but allowed a SLG .080 lower, you could add another win. Your head hurt yet? Basically, a team that consistently scores runs instead of scoring them in bunches has a better chance of winning. Ask any Red Sox fan that and they’ll point to last year’s team as an example. I can make it even easier to understand: teams with good hitters who can get on base and get extra base hits will win more than a team without. Also, good pitching and defense with a good offense leads to even more wins. So for all the new-fangled theories by baseball-obsessed scientists, it always boils down to three things. Three things that have been a constant throughout the years: Ya gotta hit, ya gotta throw

3 Vote(s)

While that still may be the case, it turns out that there are additional personal issues that likely factored into that decision. Iverson's wife filed for divorce in Fulton County Superior Court, according to a report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The petition was filed on the same day that the Sixers announced that Iverson would not return to the team this season.
Mike Tyson is reportedly considering a comeback to the ring later this year, possibly against Evander Holyfield. The boxing website, Ringsidereport.com, quoting a source close to Tyson, reports that his, "former promoter Don King has a tentative deal for Tyson to return to the ring in late 2010. The initial plan is to have Tyson-Holyfield III, but there is rumoured hesitation on the part of Iron Mike, and there is a plan B''. The former world heavyweight champion, 43, retired in June 2005 after refusing to come out for round seven against the Irish journeyman Kevin McBride. The British heavyweights Danny Williams and Lennox Lewis had also knocked out Tyson in the closing stages of his turbulent career. The 47-year-old Holyfield is due to fight the South African Frans Botha, 41, in Las Vegas on 17 April. He fought and beat Tyson twice, losing bits of his ear in the second bout. They spoke amicably when guests on Oprah Winfrey's TV show recently. Alternative opponents named for Tyson include the former world cruiserweight champion Jean Mormeck, who lost his title to David Haye, and obscure heavyweights Tony Grano, Vinny Maddalone and Derric Rossy. Tyson looked to have lost up to 40lbs for a recent walk-on appearance on the Italian TV programme, "Dancing With Stars", according to Boxing News, which would put him near his fighting weight of 15st 10lb. Interest in Tyson historically has fluctuated according to his behaviour away from boxing, but his profile in the past couple of years has been largely sympathetic. He was moving and articulate in an eponymous documentary that won several awards, and had a small part in the hit Hollywood comedy, The Hangover.

4 Vote(s)

Tiger Woods was my boyfriend for a year and a half while we were both undergraduates at Stanford. I've never spoken to the press about him; I'm not coming forward now for money or to advance any pathetic showbiz aspirations, but merely to stick up for a friend. I haven't seen Tiger since the late ’90s, but I know who he is at his core because we were together during some of his most formative years. He was so human and cared so much about other people and the world around him. This may surprise some people, but Tiger was a great boyfriend. I have so many fond memories of our time together. At that age Tiger had an amazing metabolism so we spent a lot of time eating. Our favorite restaurant was a Chinese joint in Mountain View; the guys there must have been golf fans because they always gave us free desserts, which was a big deal to us. I walked many golf courses watching Tiger play, sometimes with his mother, Tida. I grew up on an Indian reservation in Minnesota, and I think Tida accepted me so readily because Tiger and I shared many of the same values. Earl and I talked a lot about politics and national affairs, and Earl often made me laugh so hard, my stomach muscles cramped. He loved to tease Tiger and me about our puppy love. During our Southern California road trips Tiger and I spent a lot of time at the beach. We would steal a bottle of whiskey from Earl or I’d use my fake ID to buy a jug of wine, and we’d hang out and dream about the future. Tiger was very driven to be a great golfer, but he also talked a lot about wanting to make a larger contribution to society. Settling down was not a priority; Earl had drilled into Tiger that he should wait until his 30s to get married. Our relationship ended when Tiger turned pro after his sophomore year. Becoming the first person in my family to earn a college degree was so important to me that I wasn’t willing to give up my studies to follow him. Mariusz Pudzianowski, the world’s strongest man, will take on former UFC heavyweight champ Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass on April 23rd. Eric “Butterbean” Esch and co-promoter Corey Fischer told the Boston Herald that the bouts will take place under the Korean-based promotion, Moosin, and Pudzianowski vs. Sylvia will headline the event. This will be the U.S. debut for Pudzianowski, who has won the World’s Strongest Man title a record five times. The 33-year-old made his MMA debut in December and this show will mark his U.S. debut. Fischer said that former UFC fighters Rich Clementi, Yves Edwards and Houston Alexander will also fight on the card. But one quote by Fischer might be a bit much: “It’ll be on pay-per-view and shown live in Korea, Poland, Canada and about 14 other countries. This will have more viewers than (the UFC’s) show.” Perhaps in total viewership, but raise your hand if you’ve ever heard of Moosin before reading this or the Herald article.
MADRID (AP) -- Former Real Madrid and France star Zinedine Zidane says he regrets having headbutted Marco Materazzi during the 2006 World Cup final but he'd rather die than apologize to the Italian defender. In an interview with leading Spanish daily El Pais published Monday, Zidane recalled the infamous incident with a sense of shame, but he felt none toward Materazzi. "I apologize to football, to the fans, to the team... After the game, I went into the dressing room and told them, 'Forgive me. This doesn't change anything. But sorry everyone'," he said. "But to him I can't. Never, never ... it would be to dishonor me ... I'd rather die," he added. The match was Zidane's last after a sparkling career in which he became one of the game's most respected players. But in the 20th minute of extra time of the grueling game, Materazzi insulted Zidane who responded by headbutting the Italian defender violently in the chest. He consequently got sent off and from the sideline saw France lose the match. "Of course I reproach myself," Zidane told El Pais. "But, if I say 'sorry', I would also be admitting that what he did was normal. And for me it was not normal. "Things happen on the pitch. It's happened to me many times. But I could not stand it that time. Because...it's not an excuse. But my mother was sick. She was in hospital. This people didn't know. "But it was a bad moment. More than once they had insulted my mother and I never responded. But in that moment ... it happened. "If it was Kaka, an ordinary guy, a good guy, of course I would have apologized. But to this one!" he said. "If I ask forgiveness of him, I lack respect for myself and for all those I love with all my heart." Materazzi recently told Italy's La Repubblica paper he was still waiting for Zidane to apologize and that he was still so angry over the incident that he won't even watch this year's tournament in South Africa.
Daily RFT caught up with Hulk Hogan on Friday while the legendary wrestler was in town to promote his April 18 visit to the St. Charles Family Arena with TNA Lockdown. As wrestling aficionados and purveyors of pop culture know, it's been a tough couple years for the Hulkster. He's currently undergoing a nasty divorce from his wife of 20-plus years and recently settled a costly negligence suit stemming from a car crash involving his son, Nick. As we awaited our interview we watched the physically and emotionally battered wrestler hobble about a restaurant banquet room in sensible New Balance sneakers. Glued to his ear was a cell phone into which Hogan inquired whether he borrow money against his home even though the property is tied up in the divorce. Yes, these days it seems life has given Terry Bollea a.k.a. "Hulk Hogan" one of his own signature leg drops -- right to the kisser. But then that's what's always made Hogan so endearing. As high as he's flown both above and outside the ring, Hogan remains incredibly down-to-earth, as we discovered when we sat down to discuss with him mustaches, wrestling, bad movies and steroids. Our Q&A with Hogan follows... Daily RFT: First of all, how long have you worn the golden arch, a.k.a. that sexy beautiful fu-manchu of yours? Hogan: I'm going to be 57 in August. The year after I got out of high school a girlfriend asked me to grow it, and I've had ever since. So you do the math. A long time. Is it the key to your longevity in wrestling, and would you lose your power a la Sampson if you ever shaved it? If I lost the 'stache, I'd be out of gas. So, yes, I'd say it's probably the key to everything. At the end of your book (the 2009 My Life Outside the Ring) you're wavering with returning to wrestling. What brought you back into the fold? A couple of things. I was in a situation where I was kind of lost and I happened to walk by a ring in a gym. I reached out and touched it, and I got goosebumps. I knew I had a prob

6 Vote(s)

Tomorrow in Geneva, Porsche will unveil a new plug-in hybrid concept called 918 Spyder. This is not your average hybrid like Toyota Prius or Honda Insight. 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid concept is powered by a V8 that develops more than 500 horsepower and electric motors on the front and rear axle with an output of 218 horsepower. Combined power output is an impressive 708 horsepower! Purely on electric power it has a range of up to 25 km (16 miles). As the engine is positioned mid-ship, in front of the rear axle, it gives the car excellent balance and the right set-up for supreme performance on the race track. 0-100 km/h comes in just 3.2 seconds, top speed is 320 km/h (198 mph), and a lap time on the Nürburgring is less than 7:30 making it faster than the Porsche Carrera GT. What really impresses, is the fuel economy! Average fuel economy is just three liters per 100 kilometers (78 mpg) and the car emits just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Will we ever see it in production? Very likely yes as Porsche is well known for taking their concepts into reality!

3 Vote(s)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Israeli ice dancer Roman Zaretsky knows exactly what people are thinking when they see him and his sister skating hand-in-hand or doing a seductive tango.Double ick. "The romance part, it's hard to show because it's programmed in your head this is your sister," he said. "So it's hard to act." Anyone with a brother or sister knows there are times you don't even want to talk to them, let alone gaze into their eyes longingly and convince people you mean it. For four of the 23 ice dance teams at the Vancouver Olympics, however, there's no choice. Joining the Zaretskys — Roman and Alexandra — in Monday night's free dance are Britain's Sinead and John Kerr; Japan's Cathy and Chris Reed; and Germany's Christina and William Beier. Brother-sister acts are nothing new in figure skating. French ice dancers Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay added the silver medal at the 1992 Albertville Games to the world title they had won a year earlier. American siblings Kitty and Peter Carruthers were silver medalists in pairs at the 1984 Olympics. But when most fans think of pairs or dance, they like to imagine blissful love stories like 2002 Canadian pairs gold medalists Jamie Sale and David Pelletier or recent Vancouver pairs gold medalists Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo. The fact that they touch almost constantly when they're on the ice, often wear skimpy outfits that leave little to the imagination and skate to romantically themed music only adds to the illusion. "You probably don't see so many brothers and sisters who hold hands every single day," said Cathy Reed, who has been skating with her brother for nine years. But there is an upside for keeping it in the family. One of the keys for a successful dance or pairs team is similar physical characteristics: body shape, lines, coloring. When you come from the same family, the odds are pretty good that's going to be there. Sinead and John Kerr hardly look like twins — she's blo

5 Vote(s)

WHISTLER, British Columbia (AP) — Pakistan's first Winter Olympian started skiing by strapping two planks of pine wood to his rubber boots with thick rubber bands, then zipping down a tiny slope near his home.He didn't learn through training; he'd only watched other skiers navigate that same slope. Look at Muhammad Abbas now. He'll have real ski boots and real skis as he heads down the same course as Bode Miller, Ted Ligety and Aksel Lund Svindal in the giant slalom race Tuesday at the Vancouver Games. The accomplishment is something he thinks is an "unbelievable honor," said his coach and interpreter, Zahid Farooq. The 24-year-old Abbas is ranked 3,764th in the world in giant slalom. But by competing in off-the-beaten-path competitions, the ones the top skiers only attended when they were younger — if at all — he accumulated enough International Ski Federation (FIS) points to meet the Olympic standards. He is not a medal threat, and he won't wind up at the top of the leaderboard. But it's not about that. His ambitions are to soak up the moment and gain a few helpful hints to bring back to his tiny slope and inspire others. Pay the knowledge forward, like others did for him. Farooq, a retired military officer, recognized Abbas had talent as an 8-year-old kid. Abbas grew up in a village in northern Pakistan, an area surrounded by mountains. His family couldn't afford to buy him traditional skis, so his dad carved a pair out of wood. The lift at the local slope only went up 500 meters — the downhill run at Whistler is 3,105 meters — so he skied the same smooth terrain over and over. He became quite proficient on that slope, on those homemade skis. "I was the best out of the lot," Abbas proudly said through Farooq. These days, Abbas uses Atomic skis and equipment donated to him through his country's ski federation, along with the Pakistan Air Force, in which Abbas is currently enlisted, his primary duty being to ski.
The UFC battened down the hatches yesterday after Frank Mir's comments on a Pittsburgh radio show. "I want to break [Lesnar's] neck in the ring. I want him to be the first person that dies due to Octagon-related injuries." Apparently, everyone didn't get the message or memo to shut the heck up about the situation. Without seeing or hearing the comments, Mir's opponent at UFC 111, Shane Carwin, lost it to a certain extent on Mir. "I can tell you that ANY athlete wishing death upon a competitor is either a terrible human being or mentally unfit to fight," Carwin told the U.K.'s MMABay. "That type of talk and if it ever happened will take this sport backwards. Frank has been a part of the stone ages of MMA and it makes no sense why he would want or make comments that might damage a lot of the good HE has participated in adding to this sport over the years." No word yet on whether the Counsel to the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, Nick Lembo will demand that Mir be put through a battery of tests to determine his mental fitness. Carwin went on to say think what you want about Lesnar, but he's still a human being. "Brock is a heel in the ring but at home he is a human, husband, father and friend to many. Wishing death or harm upon him doesn't serve any purpose. I will do my best to make Frank's dream of fighting Brock come true, unfortunately for them it will be a three round fight as I plan on winning both of those belts." Now to the subject of "die," "kill" and "murder" being part of fighters' vernacular. Thinking back, we're finding plenty of examples where fighters have employed this kind of language. B.J. Penn on several occasions including screaming "You're dead" at Sean Sherk in the Octagon. Penn also said he would "kill" Georges St. Pierre during the extended Countdown to UFC 94 series.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — They lowered the start line, shaved the ice in some corners, and threw up safety barriers in the middle of the night. It took a singular tragedy and nearly two weeks for the people in charge of the gleaming $105 million Whistler Sliding Center track to finally get it right. They insisted it was safe all along, even while their actions made a mockery of their words. It makes you wonder if they'll ever learn the lesson, let alone by the time the next Winter Games rolls around. Asked whether the Whistler track was too fast, the veteran designer who drew it up told The Associated Press from Germany on Tuesday: "It is fast. As I have said before: If fast means dangerous, then, yes." Ugo Gurgel, whose half-dozen designs include the courses for the last two Winter Games at Turin and Salt Lake City, said safety was always his top priority. Considering what happened here, you don't know whether to be relieved or worried that the plans for the 2014 Sochi Games are already on the drawing board in his office. "It will not have the same speed," Gurgel insisted. But how can we be sure they've learned their lesson when they won't admit there's a lesson to be learned? "In racing, not everything is foreseeable," Gurgel said. Nor apparently open for discussion. Laurenz Kosichek, the architect charged with turning Gurgel's vision into reality, has been silent since a young Georgian luger was killed during a training run hours before the Olympic torch was lit. There have been more than two dozen crashes by lugers and bobsledders since. Kosichek, it seems, is barred from even discussing the track because of a confidentiality agreement with the Vancouver Organizing Committee. "We were given the designs and we implemented those," Heena Chavda, a spokeswoman at his Vancouver-based firm, Stantec, said later Tuesday. "Ugo has had such great success designing, the bobsled and luge federations were brought into the discussions and had a han

3 Vote(s)

VANCOUVER - On this improbable night of hockey, as Canada rolled to a lopsided 7-3 victory over a star-studded Russian team, Corey Perry was talking about what constitutes Canadian hockey at its very best. "That was it," said Perry. "Physical play, grinding, cycling, forechecking - that's what we did tonight and that's what wore them down." In one of the most hyped, heralded and anticipated hockey games in history, Canada unleashed a devastating first-period attack Wednesday night to crush Russia, the defending world champions and in some people's minds, the gold-medal favorite, in a men's Olympic hockey quarter-final game. In all, Canada scored six goals on 23 shots in just over 24 minutes to play to stun Russia's stylish, but on this night, badly overmatched men's team. The defeat sent the Russians home to await the start of the 2014 Games in Sochi, where the hope is they may even show up to play. Canada, meanwhile, moves on to the semi-finals Friday to face either the defending Olympic champions Sweden or Slovakia. "Unfortunately our Olympic games are over," said Russian coach Slava Bykov, "and I apologize for how it happened." No apologies were necessary for the rabid fans, who packed Canada Hockey Place, hoping to see the strong play Canada demonstrated one night earlier against Germany spill over into this match. It was a game in which everything went Canada's way, from the moment the puck was dropped between Jonathan Toews and Russia's No. 1 centre Evgeni Malkin. Canadian coach Mike Babcock cobbled together a checking line consisting of Toews, Mike Richards and Rick Nash, with Nash drawing the task of shadowing Russia's all-world scoring sensation, Alexander Ovechkin. Nash had been Canada's most physical forward in this tournament and physically, the best equipped to go head-to-head against Ovechkin, who'd pulverized the Czech star Jaromir Jagrin an earlier game.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Jay McGwire heard big brother Mark say last month he only took steroids to heal, and not to get stronger. That doesn't match Jay McGwire's recollection. "Mark knew that he was going to get the strength and endurance and size. I know that the main motive to justify taking steroids was healing," Jay McGwire said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I know that for a fact. But in the long run he knew the strength and the size and endurance will increase. I don't know why he's coming across that it was all healing." Estranged from his brother for eight years because of a family dispute, Jay McGwire has gone public in "Mark and Me: Mark McGwire and the Truth Behind Baseball's Worst-Kept Secret," which is scheduled for publication Monday by TriumphBooks. "He knows his game went to the next level because his body went to the next level," Jay McGwire said. "He knows. The body, the before and after pictures, are amazing." When he finally admitted last month that he used steroids, after he was hired as hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, Mark McGwire said it was only to help him get through injuries. "I knew if he stayed healthy, Mark would hit a lot of home runs, but I didn't know he'd hit 70," Jay McGwire said, referring to his brother's record-setting total in 1998, when he shattered Roger Maris' 61 in 1961. Jay McGwire says in the book he persuaded his brother to start using steroids regularly in 1994 and set him up with a supplier. He says Mark regularly used an array of drugs through 1996 that included Deca-Durabolin, human growth hormone, Dianabol, Winstrol and Primobolan. McGwire later used androstenedione, a steroid precursor that wasn't banned by baseball until 2004, when it became a controlled substance.
Many kids dream of being in the Olympics one day. When U.S. bobsledder Bill Schuffenhauer was a child in Salt Lake City, Utah, he had no idea the Olympics even existed. All he knew was his parents were drug addicts, that his mother was a prostitute who was often beaten in front of him. He knew that if he was going to survive, he had to do whatever it took to make it. He stole from people; he ate from garbage cans; he got locked up in juvenile detention for breaking into a bike shop when he was trying to get something he could sell for money so he could eat. He had few friends, most of them acquaintances of his mother or the other street kids, many of whom were in gangs. His mom and stepfather were constantly getting evicted. When he wasn't homeless and living in a park, he lived in foster homes. He skipped school a lot. He drank and got high on weed. Life was hard and at times terrifying, and he dreamed of finding a real home. "I knew that there was something better," Schuffenhauer, 36, said last week as he readied for his third Olympic Games. "And although there were a lot of horrible things that happened, it's made me a stronger person." Just around the time he was entering junior high, Schuffenhauer's maternal grandmother, Sadie Muniz, took him. She lived in the town of Roy, Utah, about 30 minutes north of Salt Lake City. As tears began to build, he talked about her steadying influence and how she was always there to pull him up or pull him back when he started messing up again. "She reminded me to never give up and always push on," he said. Inspired by her, he began to go to school regularly, even though this multi-ethnic kid stuck out because of his big afro and his shabby clothes. He had one thing that helped him fit in. He could run fast. Something he had relied on to escape the dangers of the streets -- and the cops -- would lead him away from his terrible past. Track and field was to be a turning point; he had real friends now and the parents o

3 Vote(s)

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has received an offer of $1 million to pose for Playgirl, according to Life & Style magazine. A spokesman for Playgirl said the magazine would donate the money to PETA, an animal-rights activist group. Vick, who spent 19 months in prison after he was convicted on felony dogfighting charges, signed with the Eagles last summer following his release from jail. Playgirl spokesman Daniel Nardicio said he sent the offer to Vick last Wednesday and called it a "win-win" situation for the quarterback. "I figured he paid back society for dog fighting, but what about the animals?" Nardicio said. "This way he could donate a large sum to PETA and all he'd have to do is pose for the magazine!" Notable female athletes such as Gabrielle Reece, Ashley Harkleroad and Amanda Beard have graced the pages of Playboy. The Eagles are getting 12/1 odds to win Super Bowl XLV. There are a number of teams interested in trading for Vick. The NFL Draft is Thursday, April 22, and Vick could be involved in a draft day deal.

2 Vote(s)

Milestone man Sachin Tendulkar re-wrote the record books on Wednesday, hammering the first double century in the history of one-day cricket to add another feather to his well-adorned cap. The capacity crowd at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium witnessed history today as Tendulkar, statistically the greatest batsman the game has ever seen, pushed a Charl Langeveldt delivery through the off-side and ran a single to achieve a feat which no other cricketer has achieved. One Day International cricket, since its 1971 inception, had to wait nearly four decades to see a batsman score 200. The previous best mark was shared by Zimbabwean Charles Coventry (194 not out) and Pakistan's Saeed Anwar (194). As the crowd erupted with unbridled joy, Tendulkar, tired but composed, took off his helmet, looked skyward, closed his eyes to offer a silent prayer. His captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni came down from the striker's end to shake hands and hug him. And as Tendulkar set on his way back to the pavilion after the completion of the Indian innings, a tumultuous celebration greeted him. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as the entire stadium erupted in euphoria while his teammates were simply ecstatic as they clapped and hugged each other, basking in the glory of their senior teammates. Tendulkar batted like a man with a mission today and the South African bowlers simply had no clue where to bowl. Once he crossed the 150-mark, the crowd anticipated something special and Tendulkar did not let them down. A six off Roelof van der Merwe took him past Kapil Dev's 175 not out and in the next over, he hit Jacques Kallis for a four to equal his previous best of 186 not out that had come against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1999. The crowd got restless as Tendulkar approached the 194-run mark and a couple off Wayne Parnell saw him eclipse it. His teammates and spectators were on the edge of their seat with a double century round the corner but with Dhoni going berserk at the striker's

3 Vote(s)

Development of the McLaren MP4-12C supercar is entering its final phase. The bespoke high-performance sports car is due to launch in 2011. Right now the latest Experimental Prototype (XP) 12Cs are undergoing intensive appraisal at a number of test locations around the world. One such site is Spain's Applus IDIADA facility, the most comprehensive independent proving ground in Europe. The XP Beta test cars feature significant technological advancements that take the 12C nearer to production. Indicative performance figures generated by the XP Beta cars are expected to be announced in March. A core team of 20-25 Vehicle Technicians travel with the XP Beta cars and are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week to support a test programme that mirrors the intensity of developing a Formula 1 car. Meanwhile, a further 12 Vehicle Development Engineers are responsible for specific technologies and systems being appraised while out on test. Mark Vinnels, McLaren Automotive Programme Director, is leading the engineering team and reported: "The benchmark competitor vehicles we have tested become nervous and twitchy at higher speed. "But the 12C feels more stable than anything I have driven. Because the bump rejection is so good, the ride is smooth and the steering is solid." He continued, "Between now and production the vehicles and the team are working flat out. "We expect to delight future McLaren customers."

4 Vote(s)

We're not speaking figuratively with that headline. A pro wrestling star was actually engulfed in flames last night in St. Louis because of a problem with the stadium's pyrotechnics. The WWE hosted a pay-per-view event last night at the Scottrade Center called "The Elimination Chamber." The match for the "World Heavyweight Championship" featured several combatants, including The Undertaker, one of the oldest characters in the soap opera/sport. The Undertaker was burned while making his grand entrance to the ring. Several flamethrowers along the walkway were shooting fire for dramatic effect. Either the wrestler mistimed his steps or the guy operating the pyrotechnics pushed a button at the wrong time, but The Undertaker was standing directly over one of flamethrowers as it spat out a ball of fire. The wrestler's robe caught fire and he began running (normally, we're told, he walks very slowly into the ring like a zombie) as he attempted to shed the smoldering garment. He was able to remove it without sustaining a serious injury and fought in the match as if nothing had happened. Unfortunately, though, he lost the fight to Chris Jericho. Amazing video of the accident after the jump...

4 Vote(s)

I have probably watched more curling, men's and women's, in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics than any other event. Some may think it's boring, but I enjoy watching matches because as they say, it's like chess on ice. There is so much strategy to the game and the only one to get inside your head is yourself. Like everything else, people watch certain sports because of who play them, and curling is no different as there are plenty of attractive women on this ice. That may be one reason I watch, but it's also because of the fact that curling only gets national television exposure every four years at the Olympics. I also like the lingo of the sport of curling: Curlers throw the 'rock' or 'stone' in each 'end', with the last one named the 'hammer'. They play on a 'sheet' to get the stones into the 'house' with the main goal of landing on the 'button'. I'm liking the sport more and more everytime I watch a match. Plus, these are everyday women who just happened to pick up curling as a sidenote early on, purely because they loved it. These athletes aren't like hockey players. The women have normal jobs back home because there is very little to no money in being a professional curler, so the Olympics is truly their chance at glory. The following ladies are my top 15 curlers that I'm watching for, and I apologize if your favorite fails to make this list. Had I known that curlers look like this, I might have taken up curling at a local club growing up and practiced my 'draw' shot.

4 Vote(s)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Chris Rudge, the CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, plopped down at his daily morning media briefing here and got right to it. “We’re going to have questions about Own the Podium,” he acknowledged. He then launched into an unprompted five-minute defense of the $118 million government-funded albatross on the Canadian team. The much hyped program declared that the Canadians would win the total medal count at the Vancouver Games – a boast that was not just bold but struck many as rather un-Canadian. Eleven days into the Olympics and Rudge has all but conceded the standard won’t be met, declaring, “It would take a miracle.” The United States has 24 total medals. Canada is tied for fourth with nine. “We’d be living in a fool’s paradise if we said we were going to catch the Americans and win,” Rudge said. “We’re going to be short of our goal, I’ll readily admit that.” The issue is compounded because the goal had been out of character for the nation. This is a country where many see value in simply doing your best, not in pursuing domination as the Americans, Russians, and Chinese do. Worse, it was taken by the rest of the world as semi-playful trash talk, and with each victory by other nations’ athletes, fans and wise-cracking media (cough, cough) have enjoyed poking fun at it. If Canada was uncomfortable with the promise, it appears even more uncomfortable with a backlash that most nations would have recognized as predictable. Canada was naive not to see it coming. Consider ever-aggressive Russia, which promised an even grander medal total of 40. It currently has eight, yet no one is fretting over it. It’s the nature of a big prediction, and that wasn’t the nation’s first. Canada’s own athletes have helped fuel the controversy. Speedskater Denny Morrison originally blamed the Own the Podium program –

2 Vote(s)

The phenomenon is common enough for the course to have its own crocodile management plan, the first step of which is calling local authorities to check the animal does not pose any danger. "It's not going to eat anyone or chase a dog down the main street, but it's an interesting find," said Mr Lawson. kind of thing."

2 Vote(s)

A female spectator was struck and killed by a tire that flew off Antron Brown's top fuel dragster when he crashed at the NHRA Arizona Nationals Sunday at Firebird International Raceway in suburban Phoenix. The woman was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Sunday evening, the NHRA reported. Earlier reports indicated the woman had been killed instantly. In any event, the sanctioning body did not make the death announcement until hours after the incident occurred. Brown was not injured in the fiery crash of his dragster. "The entire NHRA community is deeply saddened by today's incident and sends its thoughts and prayers to the woman's family and friends," the association said in an e-mailed statement. The victim was not immediately identified, but USA Today reported that she was associated with a Nostalgia Funny Car team at the event. After the woman was airlifted from the track and a rain delay ended, the event resumed. But deteriorating weather conditions and approaching darkness prompted NHRA to postpone the finals of the Top Fuel and Funny Car classes to Monday at 10 a.m. MT (Noon ET). Doug Kalitta will face Cory McClenathan in the Top Fuel final, while John Force will face Jack Beckman in the Funny Car final. Late Sunday, in an unusual move, NHRA officials announced that the Pro Stock class, which was only able to complete one round Sunday, will resume its quarterfinal eliminations for the Arizona Nationals in two weeks during the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. The Top Fuel and Funny Car finals will go on as planned for Monday at PIR. The accident occurred during the first round of the event. Brown had qualified fourth in his Matco Tools dragster. He reportedly crashed just after leaving the start line after losing a cylinder and then losing the left rear tire. The tire rocketed down the track and apparently bounced into an area that included spectators.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia--Less than a century ago, the timing of downhill skiing required someone at the top and bottom of the run, each with a stopwatch synchronized to the time of day. Every few skiers, the timer at the top would send down a piece of paper with the start times of the last few skiers and then some math would ensue, eventually resulting in the time of the run being calculated. Oh, how things have changed. Not only is everything electronic, of course, but the sensors are often tied to the athletes themselves. In speedskating, racers wear a transponder that can measure not only start and finish times, but also determine other things, such as acceleration in and out of a turn. On the slopes, it is the skier's knees passing through a "snowgate" that creates a contact, instantly sending an impulse to triggers the start of the electronic timing. "There's not a lot of human intervention," said Christophe Berthaud, general manager of Omega Timing. That said, the high-tech effort actually requires more people to administer. At its first Olympics, in Germany in 1936, Omega sent a single technician with 27 stopwatches to the Games. At the 2006 Turin, Italy, Winter Games, Omega sent 208 people--127 timekeepers and 81 data handlers--along with some 220 tons of equipment. Each year, Omega finds a new way to either enhance the accuracy or reliability of the timing. This year, for example, Omega is adding a new electronic starting gun that replaces the traditional pistol and blank cartridge. The new gun emits a consistent light and sound that can be used with a time-synchronized photo as a backup if the electronic timing system were to fail. Plus, Berthaud, notes, the new starter is a lot easier to get through airport security. Meanwhile, the ability to measure minute differences in finishing times also has improved. And a new photo finish camera, for example, shoots 2,000 frames per second. Improved ability to measure minute differences is importan

3 Vote(s)

SAO PAULO (AP) — Former world player of the year Ronaldo says he will retire after the 2011 season. The 33-year-old Brazilian striker extended his contract with Corinthians on Monday and said he plans to play two more seasons before putting an end to a successful career of more than 17 years. "I've already made up my mind, these will be my last two years," Ronaldo said. "I'll give my best and I'm hoping to have some fun and win many significant titles." Ronaldo said that after retiring he will become an ambassador for Corinthians, Brazil's second most popular club behind Flamengo. He said one of his main goals is to help Corinthians win the Copa Libertadores, the only major competition the club is yet to win in its 100-year history. "We have very passionate fans and every day I'm more in love with this club," he said.Ronaldo won the FIFA player of the year award in 1996, 1997 and 2002 and spent 15 years in European football before returning to Corinthians in the beginning of 2009 to recover from the third serious knee injury of his career. He won the World Cup in 1994 and 2002, and remains hopeful of playing in one final World Cup with Brazil before retiring. "This upcoming World Cup is still a possibility for me," said Ronaldo, the all-time scoring leader in World Cup finals with 15 goals. "But for 2014 it's impossible, times goes by for everyone." Ronaldo scored 62 goals in 97 internationals with Brazil, but he hasn't been called up to the national team since the 2006 World Cup, when Brazil lost to France in the quarterfinals. The striker also played in the 1998 World Cup, when Brazil lost to the French in the final. Ronaldo played most of his career in Europe with PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan. He returned to Brazil after being released by AC Milan in 2008 following an injury to his left knee.
A strong medal contender was among two Swiss athletes to withdraw Friday from Olympic bobsled events after scary crashes, on a day when an American bobsledder said the venue where a luger was killed last week could generate speeds that are too dangerous. Swiss-1 driver Beat Hefti, this season's overall World Cup champion, pulled out of two-man because of a concussion in a crash Wednesday. He hasn't decided whether to race in the four-man, which starts next Friday. Swiss driver Daniel Schmid, who was not a medal favorite and has had previous problems on the track, pulled out of the two-man and four-man bob for "safety reasons" after two practice crashes. "It's just so fast," American women's bobsledder Shauna Rohbock said, later adding, "I think they went a little overboard on this track." On Friday, Schmid's sled overturned during training and his brakeman, Juerg Egger, was taken from the track in an ambulance, then flown to Vancouver for observation. A team doctor said there were no serious injuries. "He has a cervical spine injury," Christian Schlegel, Switzerland's bobsled doctor, said of Egger. "He can walk, he has no motor function disruption." A statement said Schmid's decision to drop out was made jointly between the Swiss team and bobsled officials. At least 11 two-man bobsleds spilled sideways in the first two days of training earlier this week. There was one crash during training Friday night when Esme Kamphuis of the Netherlands tipped over and slid through the final corners. On Saturday, a Russian sled lost control just past the midway point of the course. No injuries were reported. Rohbock and many of the women's bobsledders who will compete on the track next week got their first on-ice look at the facility during a supplemental training session Friday night. The extra session was added by international officials earlier this week to help racers familiarize themselves with the demanding track. The session was added after the death last Frid

4 Vote(s)

Just before Christmas, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty sent a ripple through the mixed martial arts community when he told a TV interviewer his mind was open to legalizing the sport here. McGuinty's mind may not have changed, but his thinking seems to have shifted, and Wednesday he made it clear he's not devoting much time to MMA these days. "It's just not a priority for us," he told reporters at Queen's Park. "We have other things on the go right now, and we'll stay focused on those." Asked what that means to the UFC's future in Ontario, McGuinty was curt: "It means that we're focused on other things right now." The shift in McGuinty's thinking deals a significant blow to the UFC's plans to expand to Ontario, which joins New York as the last major North American jurisdictions against mixed martial arts, the almost-no-holds-barred form of fighting the UFC made famous. "We respect the fact the Premier has indicated that MMA regulation is not a top priority, however, we are confident that our efforts in educating Canadian officials including members of the provincial cabinet will eventually result in regulation of the sport in Ontario," said Marc Ratner, UFC's vice-president of government and regulatory affairs. Last year, the UFC hired the law firm of Cassels Brock and Blackwell to lobby the provincial government, and the organization estimates a UFC event in Toronto would generate $4 million in revenue for the provincial government. After the Massachusetts state legislature and Vancouver city council agreed to legalize MMA in late 2009, UFC president Dana White vowed New York and Ontario would fall in line next. "I want to get it done next year," White said in December. "Ontario's a very important market for us."

5 Vote(s)

William Wesley, a middle-aged mortgage broker, runs onto the court to shield Ron Artest from a uniformed police officer wielding a can of pepper spray. Artest’s teammates are trading haymakers with fans; coaches and referees are struggling to restore order. The mortgage broker lunges forward and throws his hands in the cop’s face, and in the next instant, Pacers teammates Austin Croshere and Reggie Miller rush to restrain Artest. Through a tempest of tossed soda and popcorn, Wesley moves on to shepherding the Pacers’ Jermaine O’Neal on the court. Once in the tunnel, O’Neal breaks free, but Wesley wraps him in a bear hug and drags him to the locker room. Two years later, when I ask Reggie Miller about Wesley’s presence on the court, he’ll say: “What the hell is he doing out there in the middle of all that?
As golfers lined up putts in respectful silence below, a small airplane circled over last week's PGA Tour event in San Diego - dragging a banner reading, "We miss you Tiger! Deja vu Showgirls." The next day, a competing strip club countered with a plane toting this message: "We miss you too Tiger! Dreamgirls." This is the strange, new realm professional golf now inhabits, where strip clubs jostle for business in the airspace above tournaments. By most accounts, Tiger Woods originally planned to play in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which starts Thursday. That would have created quite a scene: Woods, probably the world's most famous athlete, strolling the picturesque fairways on the Monterey Peninsula for the first time in eight years. Then, on Nov. 27, he drove his sport utility vehicle into a fire hydrant and a tree outside his Florida home - triggering a salacious sex scandal that includes allegations of numerous extramarital affairs. The story shook the PGA Tour to its core and prompted Woods to take an indefinite leave as he tries to salvage his marriage. As the tour swings through Northern California, it's clearly not the same without Woods, the world's No. 1 player and the game's defining figure. His absence has added another layer to the challenges facing professional golf, already coping with the effects of the nation's slumping economy. The efforts to overcome this double whammy are meeting with mixed results. Commissioner Tim Finchem said the tour has extended sponsorship agreements, or brought in new sponsors, for 15 events in the past few months. Prize money is comparable to what it was in 2009 (about $275 million) and Finchem anticipates the tour's charitable giving to rebound from a 12 percent drop last year. Then again, the tour could not find a title sponsor for last month's Bob Hope Classic in Palm Springs. It reached a last-minute deal with Farmers Insurance to sponsor the tournament at San Diego's Torrey Pines, reportedly fo

5 Vote(s)

Spills are common in bobsledding, but since these topples come less than a week after the death of a Georgian men's luge athlete in a high-speed training wreck, speed and safety have once again been thrust into the forefront at the Olympic track. "I've just crashed once here," Canadian bobsled pilot Lyndon Rush said. "But I've come really close — lots." Meanwhile, bobsled's international governing body said Thursday it would offer women's and four-man bobsledders extra training runs on the lightning-fast track, "out of an abundance of caution." "The FIBT has had the opportunity to gain more track time," international federation president Robert Storey said. Some clearly could use it. Beat Hefti, this season's World Cup two-man overall champion, missed training Thursday with a headache after crashing on his first practice run the previous night. Hefti was checked out at a hospital for bruises on his head and body, as well as cuts on one of his legs, Switzerland team officials said in a release. He'll need medical clearance — plus clean runs on Friday — in order to race this weekend. "His coach said he's going to train (Friday)," said International Federation of Bobsled and Tobogganing spokesman Don Krone. Also Wednesday, Australian push athlete Duncan Harvey was briefly hospitalized complaining of sharp back pain after another crash, and doctors eventually decided to hold him out of Thursday's training for precautionary reasons. Harvey was not seriously injured; he even walked the short distance back to the athletes' village from the medical center in the wee hours of Thursday morning. "Seeing him this morning was kind of nasty," said Chris Spring, the driver of the sled that wr

5 Vote(s)

Bob Costas Yesterday, we invited NBC to answer a few simple questions about why it is ruining the Olympics for millions of Americans by refusing to show events live and instead saving everything for a stale evening highlight reel. So far, this invitation has been greeted with deafening silence. The answer, almost certainly, is "money," but we are actually interested in the details. Why is it to NBC's benefit to ruin the Olympics for millions? Why not just show the events live on subsidiary networks and then show them AGAIN on the puffy highlight reel? And inasmuch as NBC seems intent on ruining the Olympics regardless of how much we and others scream, why not explain to America why it is choosing to do this? The answer can't be that appalling, can it? Presumably it's all about trying to get the biggest possible evening audience for those precious sponsors, never mind that half the evening Olympics audience is so bored or angry that they're doing something else or wishing they could throw their remotes through their TVs. Inquiring minds want to know why, in the Internet age, when Olympics results are available in real time everywhere, including on NBC's Olympics web site, NBC is refusing to explain its coverage decisions to America. And as NBC sits in its polished silence, the pressure is building on the network to say something. Every day, we get emails from Canadians crowing about how awesome their TV coverage is. Every day, we watch the Twitter stream cursing NBC for its tone-deafness. Every day we get steamed emails from Americans furious that a greedy corporation is coming between them and their favorite events. And every evening, as we sit in the same room as a TV showing the highlights of events we knew the results of hours earlier (occasionally glancing up from our laptops to see whether the replay is remotely interesting), we also shake our heads at the lengths NBC goes to create the impression that all these replays are actually happenin

4 Vote(s)

The 27-year-old left the starting gate and within a blink of an eye lost her balance. She toppled over and landed in the snow in front of stunned spectators. After four years of training, Rolland was hopeful of winning a medal in the women's downhill event at the course in Whistler Mountain. She is ranked seventh in the World Cup downhill rankings and came fifth in last year's World Championship.
Rajaan Bennett, a Vanderbilt football prospect, was tragically killed early Thursday in what police are describing as an apparent murder-suicide at Bennett's mother's home in Powder Springs. Police were alerted to danger at the house when they received a 911 call at 2:30 am with someone whispering for help. Officers arrived about four minutes later, and "as they approached and knocked on the door, they heard several gunshots," Powders Springs police Major Charles Spann told the AJC. Immediately after the four or five shots rang out, Narjaketha Bennett, 37, and Taijan Hunter, 32, ran from the house, hysterical, police said. Two "juveniles" exited the house shortly after that and when police were able to enter the house, they found two people dead: the young Bennett and the 39-year-old Clifton O'Neal Steager, an ex-boyfriend of Bennett's mother. Bennett was the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Class AAAAA player of the year and was described by his high school coach as "just one of the best ever" (regarding his character). Needless to say, this is an awful, awful awful situation, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bennett family. Much like the inexplicable death of prospect Billey Joe Johnson, Bennett's passing makes everyone wonder, "Why?" Clearly it seems like the case of an angry (and likely/possibly drunk) ex-boyfriend of his mother, but it's just all the more frustrating/disheartening/etc when you hear things like what was recently said by his coach to Vandy officials: I'm sure you want to talk about Rajaan on the football field, but I promise he's a better person than he is player. He has a great head on his shoulders, a guy that has been the man in his household for quite a while, yet still worked to maintain a solid GPA in class and become such a great player. In other words, we aren't talking about a young man who skated by with bad grades and utilizing his name value/status as a prospect -- we're talking about a legitimately bright young ma

5 Vote(s)

During the TNT 2010 All-Star Game telecast, Ernie Johnson revealed the Player of the Decade as voted on by fans at NBA.com. The runaway winner was Kobe Bryant, with 54% of the vote, followed by LeBron James at 17%. Tim Duncan and Shaquille O’Neal — the two most deserving of consideration, in my humble opinion — only garnered 8% and 13% respectively. Here is where I have to step in, agree with Charles Barkley and the rest of the knowledgeable TNT crew and say, “what are you thinking, people?!?” Results from votes like this really show that the general public should not be given a say in anything important. Things like…hmmm…who should run a country. Oh hang on, they already do! But seriously, just like the shambles of an All-Star vote that sees Tracy McGrady almost get in and Allen Iverson actually get voted in as a starter, the public continues to show how little they know about NBA basketball. And how short their memories are. If we were to conduct a poll of the Top Player of the Past Five Years, sure, Bryant gets the vote, hands down (with a nod to LeBron James). Of the decade, however? It’s Shaq and Duncan all the way, battling for the crown. Duncan has been consistently brilliant during this past decade, averaging approximately 21.0ppg, 11.5rpg and 2.7bpg without indiscretion, whilst leading his team to four titles (granted one of those did come in 1998-99). And O’Neal, well let’s just say that if you look at his three titles in LA (don’t for a second think that they weren’t all about him) and then to follow that up with a ring in Miami… well, if he had his first five years of the decade now (take a look at the ridiculous numbers), we wouldn’t have so many short-memoried people. Don’t dismiss this as some Kobe Bryant haterade. Twin sisters Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux also were among 10 goal-scorers for the Americans, who followed up their 12-1 opening win over China with another exhibition of their skill and depth over two dominant periods before cooling it down in the third. American coach Mark Johnson is no stranger to the U.S.-Russia rivalry after scoring two goals in the Miracle on Ice game at Lake Placid six days shy of 30 years ago, but the most remarkable happening at UBC Thunderbird Arena was that the score wasn't even worse. Jessie Vetter made seven saves for the Americans, who led 12-0 after two periods before throttling down their offense, taking just two shots in the third. The hapless Russian team gave little help to its two backup goalies facing the loaded U.S. lineup. "All we were trying to do was keep everyone involved and playing," said four-time Olympian Angela Ruggiero, who scored her second goal of the games. "We still had things we could work on while still respecting our opponent." The Russians took a long list of minor penalties while simply trying to keep up with the faster, stronger Americans, and the U.S. capitalized with seven power play goals — many within the first few seconds of the man-advantage. After Canada outscored its first two opponents 28-1, the Americans have a 25-1 differential. Starting in the second period, the U.S. team cycled the puck, made extra passes on the power play and even made substitutions while in the offensive zone — but seemingly each time they flung a puck at the net, Russia's goalies couldn't handle it. So the Americans took it a step further in the third period, taking just one shot in the first 16 minutes and finishing with two.
The day before he died, luger Nodar Kumaritashvili spoke to his father by phone and said he was terrified of the track at the Whistler Sliding Center. David Kumaritashvili gave an interview Sunday outside his house in the Georgian mountain town of Bakuriani, recounting one of the last conversations he had with his 21-year-old son. The Wall Street Journal reports: "He called me before the Olympics, three days ago, and he said, 'Dad, I'm scared of one of the turns.' "I said, 'Put your legs down on the ice to slow down,' but he said if he started the course he would finish it. ... He was brave." Nodar Kumaritashvili also spoke with his parents minutes before his fateful slide, telling them he planned to make them proud, according to The Globe and Mail. Since his death, many people have debated whether the track was too fast or the relatively inexperienced luger was out of his element. A number of Olympic lugers think the track was fine. They fault Kumaritashvili – a sentiment shared by luging officials who deemed the track safe (even while hypocritically lowering the starting location and adding pads to the metal beams that caused the death). Germany's Natalie Geisenberger, who won a race at Whistler last year, said the women's event has turned into a kids race, a startlingly insensitive remark given the tragedy of Friday: I'm not happy about the new start. It’s not a woman’s start, it’s a kinder (German for children’s) start. The rest of the track is OK, but it's not as fast as from the proper start. It's the same for all the athletes, but I don't like it. I felt very good, but now because of the new start it's not fun. Canadian Regan Lauscher complained that the lowered start means her nation's home-track advantage is "basically gone." Given that some have said Canada's resistance to allow other countries to train at the Whistler track played a role in Kumaritashvili's death, that comment beats out even Geis

2 Vote(s)

DALLAS — This is the part where David Falk can smirk, say “I told you so” and upbraid everyone who ignored his warnings. But Falk is not in a gloating mood.A year ago, during a wide-ranging interview to promote his book, Falk — the N.B.A.’s first superagent and a longtime confidant of Michael Jordan’s — warned that the league was in economic distress, that the owners would be seeking huge concessions from players and that a lockout was possible, perhaps even likely. Falk predicted then that the N.B.A. would seek a hard salary cap, shorter contracts, a higher minimum age for incoming players, elimination of the midlevel cap exception and an overall reduction in the players’ percentage of revenue. When the N.B.A. and the players union opened negotiations this weekend in Dallas, every item on Falk’s list was in play, as part of the league’s initial proposal. Billy Hunter, the union’s executive director, called the proposal oppressive Friday, after a 90-minute negotiating session that he described as contentious. Predictions of a lockout are common among players and owners. Falk, who keeps a low profile these days and represents only a handful of players, is watching from a safe distance in dismay and feeling no satisfaction at seeing his prophecy fulfilled. “No, not at all,” he said in a telephone interview, adding, “I don’t think it takes a great seer to predict what was going to happen.” Falk, who played an active role during the 1998-99 lockout, the only work stoppage in league history, is intimately familiar with the issues and the personalities. He is friendly with many owners and team executives, and less so with the union leaders, in whom he has little faith. “I’m frustrated,” Falk said, “because I think that a lockout is an untenable position for both parties, but especially for the players.
The international career of the Wales back-row forward Andy Powell lies in tatters today after he was charged with driving a golf buggy while over the limit and thrown out of the national squad exactly a year after he received a warning about his future behaviour following a drunken night out in Cardiff as he and some team-mates celebrated victory over England. Powell, 28, was arrested early early yesterday morning at a service station off the M4 to the west of Cardiff, hours after Wales had beaten Scotland, having allegedly failed a breath test. He has been bailed to appear before Cardiff magistrates on 2 March, four days after Wales' next Six Nations match against France at the Millennium Stadium. The Welsh Rugby Union met Powell this morning and suspended him for behaviour "contrary to the squad's code of conduct". Last year Powell was reprimanded, with three other players, after an investigation into drunken antics following the England victory. "They have all been warned that their involvement in events will be taken into account in future if they are party to any incidents where misconduct is apparent by any squad member," the WRU said then. It is alleged that Powell and a friend, who was not charged, drove a golf buggy three miles from the hotel in the Vale of Glamorgan where the Welsh squad are based to the service station where he was arrested at 5.40 in the morning. He was charged with driving a mechanically propelled vehicle while unfit through drink. "We take matters of player conduct extremely seriously and have been happy with the professionalism and discipline of this squad in general terms," said the Wales team manager, Alan Phillips. "Andy knows he has misbehaved and is apologetic but he also knows that he must take responsibility for his own actions and accept the repercussions. "This kind of behaviour cannot be tolerated in a professional, elite sporting environment and we have acted quickly and incisively to leave no ambiguity over the d

4 Vote(s)

WHISTLER, British Columbia — As the Olympic sliding sports schedule moves from luge to skeleton to bobsled, a constant remains: The competitors will hurl themselves down the icy chute of the Whistler Sliding Centre, billed as the fastest track in the world, where a luge athlete from the Republic of Georgia was killed last week in a training crash.Olympic officials and the sport’s international governing body responded to the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili by shortening the course to reduce speeds. However, no such precautions will be taken for skeleton and bobsled, which can also attain speeds in excess of 85 miles per hour and have had their share of violent crashes, including dozens on this track since it opened two years ago. Those sports are governed by an international federation known as the F.I.B.T., which is separate from the International Luge Federation. The bobsled and skeleton federation said shortening the course was not an option. “Bobsled and skeleton need a running start,” the group’s spokesman, Don Krone, said. “For competitions, there are no other starts than at the top.” Except for one training run, at least, the starting point for skeleton athletes was the same as for the women’s luge. After analyzing the number of training runs each athlete had here — the Russian skeleton racer Elena Yudina, for example, had never raced on the course — the bobsled and skeleton federation presented an additional training opportunity at the captains’ meetings Sunday. Thirteen of the 48 Olympic skeleton racers accepted the offer. “At the teams’ captains’ meeting, we told the national federations and team captains that they cannot take entrance into the event lightly and they have to determine the competence of the athlete,” Krone said.
IN A few days America’s pitchers and catchers are due to report for spring training. So you would expect the managers of the New York Yankees, the “world” champions (meaning winners of America’s main tournament), to be in America frantically trying to plug holes in the team’s line-up or, at the very least, subverting similar efforts by their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox. Instead, the team’s president, Randy Levine, and general manager, Brian Cashman, are busy with a much trickier task: hauling the championship trophy around China in the hope of drumming up interest in a country that views a baseball as something to be manufactured and sold (which it does by the million), rather than thrown and hit (which it barely does at all). Somewhere in China, reasons Mr Cashman, there is a kid who can throw a baseball at 98mph (158kph). Find him, turn him into a star and he will awaken a nation of fans. He points to the spectacular commercial success of America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) in China after the recruitment of the seven-and-a-half-foot Yao Ming, from Shanghai, to the Houston Rockets, whose jerseys are a ubiquitous presence on the backs of Chinese children. The NBA does not release financial results from China but outsiders reckon it earns hundreds of millions of dollars annually from product licensing, television rights and sponsorship deals with firms such as Coca-Cola and Lenovo. NBA is one of the most commonly entered terms on Chinese search engines. Friday nights for many people in China are a time to watch American games on the state-owned broadcaster, CCTV. NBA stores are easy to find, as are billboards featuring stars such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. A faded star, Stephon Marbury, recently signed on with an obscure team in northern China, doubtless hoping to boost his brand of trainers. The NBA estimates 300m people play the game in China.
His name is Alex Bilodeau. He is 22 years old. His mother forced him to quit playing hockey at the age of seven, so he grudgingly moved to the freestyle club at the local ski hill. Remember the name, Canada: Alex Bilodeau. The moguls skier from Rosemere, Que. goes down in history as the first Canadian to ever win gold on home soil. “I don't think I realize it yet,” said Canada's newest sporting hero, standing under the bright lights at Cypress Mountain. “It's just too good to be true.” And to think Bilodeau also saved people from coast to coast the indignity of watching West Vancouver native Dale Begg-Smith become the first Canadian to hit the top of the podium at home. On behalf of his adopted country of Australia. “Alex took the first gold,” said Canadian coach Dominick Gauthier. “The other athletes can just breathe a bit. The first gold has been won.” And the pressure, to a degree, is off. “Of course people would have freaked out like we did for Beijing,” Gauthier said of the entire week without a single medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. “Now it's done. The athletes can just think about what they have to do.” Canada's dubious shutout streak extended through the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and two days of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Jenn Heil, Bilodeau's training partner, won silver Saturday. The country expected gold. But the avalanche of Canadian medals, Bilodeau promised, has just begun. “There are so many good golds to come,” said Bilodeau, who finished 11th as a teenager at the Turin Olympics. “I've seen all the other athletes in competition. They are so strong. I'm going to be in the stands cheering for them. “I'll try to keep a bit of voice for them.” That might be tough.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Twelve years ago at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, a 17-year-old speedskating prodigy named Kirstin Holum was tapped for future greatness. When Holum placed sixth in the 3,000 meters – one of the most grueling disciplines in the women’s program, a lung-scraping four-minute bust of lactic acid torture – speedskating insiders predicted a golden future and speculated she may not even reach her peak for another decade.Like many of the longer distances, the 3,000 is regularly dominated by older athletes, as it can take years to build up the requisite reserves of aerobic capacity and deep-tissue resilience. At Nagano, 32-year-old Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann of Germany claimed the gold. Holum was born into speedskating royalty. Her mother Dianne was a world-class speedskater who won Olympic gold in 1972 and reached even greater heights as a coach, mentoring the legendary Eric Heiden to his clean sweep at Lake Placid in 1980. Despite an ongoing battle with exercise-induced asthma, Holum was a champion waiting to happen. Instead, Nagano would signal the final time she would pull on a pair of skates with competitive intent. From that point on, her life began an entirely different journey. “Speedskating was such a huge part of my life,” Holumn said in a telephone interview with Yahoo! Sports. “I still loved the sport, but I had this incredibly strong calling that it was time to move on and take a different path in life.” There is no television and no internet at St. Joseph’s Convent in Leeds, England, meaning Holum won’t get to watch the Winter Olympics where she was supposed to become a star. The peaceful surrounds of the convent is where Holum, now known as Sister Catherine, devotes her life to religious service as a Franciscan nun.
DeltaWing has revealed a radical new model for its IndyCar concept. Besides the three other companies, Dallara, Lola and Swift, DeltaWing is one of the primary competitors for the new IndyCar design that will be used from 2012. The company- spearheaded by team owner Chip Ganassi and Ganassi racing engineer Ben Bowlby - showcased the model to a curious audience of journalists and IndyCar drivers. The design was long awaited by many critics and experts who anticipated a radical and bizarre design model from DeltaWing. The unusual body structure is designed to minimize aerodynamic disturbances. The car consists of an ultra-skinny front track to save weight, along with a prominent tail fin that adds stability without inducing aerodynamic drag. The car has been specially designed to weigh almost half than today’s car, generating only half the aerodynamic drag, as well as improving a staggering 100 % on the fuel-efficiency factor. DeltaWing claims that the car delivers 235 mph laps with half the power and fuel consumption.

5 Vote(s)

Tickets for the UFC's third-ever Canadian card will go on sale Feb. 20, and the promotion hopes to answer a lingering debate in the main event. The world's largest MMA promotion on Thursday evening officially announced that "UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun II" is scheduled for May 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and features a light heavyweight title rematch between Lyoto Machida (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (18-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC). The two first met in Los Angeles this past October at UFC 104 and ignited a firestorm of controversy over judging in MMA. Rua was the aggressor through most of the fight and chased after the champion with persistent leg kicks. Meanwhile, Machida stayed true to his counter-attack style and sniped at the advancing challenger. After a five-round battle, both men stood with their hands raised in victory. A crowd-pleasing fight it was not. Still, most fans and media thought Rua had done enough to earn the judges' nod. But judges gave the fight to Machida by unanimous 48-47 scores, prompting scores of boos and calls of robbery. UFC president Dana White publicly disagreed with the outcome, stating he thought Rua won. From the first question at the post-fight press conference, rematch was the word of the day. "The first fight between Machida and 'Shogun' was very controversial, I think fans are very excited to see them fight again and find out who the best light heavyweight in the world is," White stated in Thursday's release. Although not confirmed by the promotion's announcement, welterweights Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley are expected to meet in the co-main event of UFC 113. The two have sparred in the press since rumors of the match-up surfaced in multiple reports. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was the first to report the fight's booking for UFC 113 on May 1 before White moved the event to May 8 when an expected boxing event featuring Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley created the possibility

4 Vote(s)

McIff is from Richfield, Morrison's original hometown. "That simple little toy has permeated every continent in every country, as many homes have Frisbees as any other device ever invented," McIff said. "How would you get through your youth without learning to throw a Frisbee?" Morrison's son, Walt, told The Associated Press Thursday that "old age caught up" with his father and that he also had cancer. "He was a nice guy. He helped a lot of people," Walt Morrison said. "He was an entrepreneur. He was always looking for something to do." Morrison sold the production and manufacturing rights to his "Pluto Platter" in 1957. The plastic flying disc was later renamed the "Frisbee," with sales surpassing 200 million discs. It is now a staple at beaches and college campuses across the country and spawned sports like Frisbee golf and the team sport Ultimate. An official disc golf course at Creekside Park in the Salt Lake City suburb of Holladay is named for Morrison. Morrison co-wrote a book with Frisbee enthusiast and historian Phil Kennedy in 2001. Kennedy released a brief biography about Morrison on Thursday, wishing his late friend "smoooooth flights." According to Kennedy, Morrison and his future wife, Lu, used to toss a tin cake pan on the beach in California. The idea grew as Morrison considered ways to make the cake pans fly better and after serving as a pilot in World War II, Morrison began manufacturing his flying discs in 1948. He would hawk the discs at local fairs and eventually attracted Wham-O Manufacturing, the company that bought the rights to Morrison's plastic discs. Kennedy says Wham-O adopted the name "Frisbee" because that's what college students in New England were calling the

2 Vote(s)

Throughout history, man has struggled to make sense of the world around him, to explain phenomena that are beyond his capacity for understanding. Full eclipses, Halley's comet, plagues, droughts, floods -- you name it -- inspired legends and myths that, at their root, reduced the unfathomable to man's level. Such has been the case with Buster Douglas' epic victory against Mike Tyson since the fighters met in the ring Feb. 11, 1990, in Tokyo. To account for an upset of that magnitude -- the sports equivalent of an act of God -- a catalogue of myths was created, nurtured and popularized. But now, 20 years after Tyson was counted out, the public needs to be disabused of its misimpressions. The myths must be dispelled.

2 Vote(s)

Scotland suffered a blow to their hopes of qualifying for the ICC World Twenty20 when they were beaten by the USA in their opening qualifier. The USA won by six wickets after reaching Scotland's total of 120-7 with five balls remaining. Scotland elected to bat first in Abu Dhabi and captain Gavin Hamilton was his side's top scorer with 41. But Jamaican-born Carl Wright hit 62, while Guyanese Lennox Cush added 41 to set up the USA's surprise victory. The Scots must now bounce back in matches against Afghanistan and Ireland if they are to be one of the two teams to qualify for the next stages from their pool. Afghanistan, who beat the Irish by 13 runs on Tuesday, are next up for the Scots on Wednesday. A disappointed Hamilton said: "I think credit should be given where it is due. The USA bowled well with the new ball and our batting wasn't up to the standard against them. "Every game is now a must-win. We're going to have a look at the team and we may well have to do a bit of a reshuffle in the side for our game against Afghanistan." USA heroes Wright and Cush added 97 runs for the second wicket in 82 balls, with the former clubbing eight fours from 57 balls, while Cush struck three fours and a six from 39 balls. "It was a collective effort and a great achievement," said Wright. "The bowlers made it much easier for us to go out and get the runs. "I'm excited about my man-of-the-match but we have to keep up with our positive attitude and move as a group for our game against Ireland."

3 Vote(s)

The city is known as a progressive place with a strong environmental policy, so when they were awarded the Olympics they set to work greening the entire affair. One of the steps in making the Olympics greener was commissioning recycled medals. But the unique medals aren’t made out of any old recycled material: they use components of old electronics. It’s fun … I get to be the strongest kid in the world.” He can back up statements like that. Hedrich, an Elgin native, recently set the world-record for bench press with the Raw Powerlifting Federation, at a competition in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The youngster hoisted 57 ½ pounds. If that doesn’t sound impressive, consider his frame: the third grader weighs just 54 pounds himself. He broke the record for his weight and age class. It’s something he’s been training for his whole life.Hedrich’s father, Ken, who set a national record for his age group with a 330-pound press, started his boy on an exercise routine before he could crawl. “Literally I started him from day one,” Ken Hedrich, 40, an exercise physiologist who runs Body Evolution training center in St. Charles, said. “I know it sounds weird but even when he was in his diapers I had him doing resistance training.” Andrew entered into his first power lifting competition at the tender age of four, which is a little out of the ordinary, said Raw Power’s regional chairman Ed Horowitz, who oversaw Andrew’s lift. “It’s pretty rare to have a kid that age in here,” Horowitz said. “Usually you don’t see kids getting into powerlifting until they’re at least into their high school years.
2010 was originally set to be the last year of competition for the aging Dallara IndyCar chassis. Political turmoil has postponed the changeover, however, and the IRL is currently evaluating its options. This car is part of Swift Engineering's proposal. The Indy Racing League has had a tough couple of years. Rising costs, shrinking TV audiences, and the very public CART battle have left the series on somewhat unstable ground. Its star drivers have a bad habit of defecting to greener pastures (see Hornish/Patrick/NASCAR, etc.), and its spec car is neither dramatic nor particularly inspiring to watch run. In a nutshell, the IRL is floundering, a series in search of a soul. Plans to revamp the league have been underway for some time, but concrete results have yet to appear. The current car — a dumpy-looking spec chassis built by Italian manufacturer Dallara and powered by a Honda V-8 — is one of the areas targeted for change. Several meetings between IRL officials and potential engine suppliers took place in 2009, and chassis proposals have been recieved from manufacturers like Lola, Dallara, and the Chip Ganassi-backed Delta Wing. Exact specifications are still up in the air, but the engine package has reportedly been narrowed down to a vague set of requirements: a displacement under two liters, no more than four valves per cylinder, and allowable direct injection and turbocharging. The car you see here is part of a proposal by American racing-car manufacturer Swift Engineering, one designed to help reinvigorate the series while offering fan- and driver-friendly qualities. (Swift has a long history of race-car construction; the firm essentially reinvented Formula Ford in the early 1980s and is responsible for the current Toyota Atlantic chassis.) There isn't much available in the way of specifics, but Swift's proposal appears to offer two separate body styles — a low-drag setup for ovals and a downforce-heavy arrangement for road courses &mda

2 Vote(s)

At first glance, comparing MMA’s Brock Lesnar to basketball’s Kobe Bryant seems impossible. Bryant is a champion athlete who uses an undeniable and unparalleled skill set to dominate his competition, while Lesnar dominates with his brute force and raw physical gifts. In many ways, it’s like comparing the grace of a swan to the power of a rhino. Athletically, the two couldn’t be further apart, but it is in how they are perceived by their respective fan bases that the two are surprisingly similar. The fans either love them or they despise them, and there is little if any gray area in between. Go to any NBA fan forum on the Internet and post “Kobe Bryant is overrated.” Within moments your post would be flooded with replies either fully supporting or completely blasting you for your basketball blasphemy. Now, go to an MMA forum and post “Brock Lesnar is unstoppable.” Like with the Bryant post, this post will be fiercely and passionately debated. While, every athlete has fans that are willing to defend them tooth and nail on the web should anyone speak ill of them, there are few who can polarize fans in the way Bryant and Lesnar do. So, what is it about Lesnar exactly that can draw so many in yet at the same time push so many away? One word—Personality. Lesnar has a big personality that either sucks fans in to the hype and mystique or pushes fans to see nothing but smoke and mirrors. No one can deny that a healthy and motivated Lesnar has to the physical tools alone to be a force in the division. But combine God’s gifts with his top notch wrestling pedigree and a fierce competitive fire and Lesnar could become the most feared heavyweight to ever compete in the sport. Yet, somehow that matters very little in the eyes of many. Rather than looking at the positives that Lesnar brings to the sport with him, a large segment of the fan base focuses on the negatives of his presence; the most glaring being

4 Vote(s)

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Randy Couture stopped Mark Coleman with a rear naked choke Saturday night to win a bout between two UFC hall-of-famers in their mid-40s. The five-time champion took Coleman down early in the second round and quickly gained the mount position. Coleman, who at 45 is a year younger than Couture, rolled and gave up his back to Couture, who then sunk in the submission attempt and forced the referee to stop the fight at 1:09 of the second round. "He gave me his back and fell right into the choke," Couture said. "I was very happy, I couldn't have mapped it out better." Couture is the oldest fighter to compete in the UFC and still has plans to regain the heavyweight championship he has held on three previous occasions. "What are you supposed to feel like when you're 46?" he said. "I don't know, but I feel good." In the earlier co-main event, Chael Sonnen beat Nate Marquardt by unanimous decision, earning a shot at the middleweight title. All three judges had it 30-27 for Sonnen, who will face the winner of the Anderson Silva-Vitor Belfort bout in April. Sonnen controlled Marquardt for much of the fight, taking him down multiple times and landing a number of solid blows. Marquardt opened a large gash above Sonnen's eyebrow and nearly locked him in guillotine choke late in the final round but couldn't neutralize Sonnen's Olympic-level wrestling skills. "There was a point there where I felt the tables had turned, but thankfully I got out of it," Sonnen said. "The difference was being able to maintain top position." In earlier fights, former welterweight champ Matt Serra TKO'd Frank Trigg in the first round, flooring him with an overhand right and forcing the ref to stop the fight with a flurry of punches. Paulo Thiago submitted Mike Swick with a D'Arse choke in the second round and middleweight contender Demian Maia won a unanimous decision over Dan Miller.
As Shani Davis approached the starting line for a World Cup race in November, at an ice oval in the Dutch town of Heerenveen north of Amsterdam, a marching band that was circling the arena stopped playing, and the festive crowd — many of them dressed from head to toe in orange, the national color — roared in anticipation. Davis, who is 27 and poised to become one of the most decorated Winter Olympians ever to compete for the United States, is like an American jazzman in the 1950s — little known and poorly compensated at home but beloved in certain parts of Europe. Here, they understand his sport and perhaps, on some level, even Davis himself, who accumulates grievances and clings to them as if they were first-place medals. “We can see that Shani is someone who lives for speed skating, and we don’t care so much about all the rest of it,” Irene Postma, a Dutch journalist who covers the sport, told me as we waited for the race to begin. “And he is so perfect, so beautiful when he races. I would know him just by his silhouette.”A starter’s gun fired, and Davis sprinted off in the 1,000 meters, one of two distances at which he holds the world record, atop blades that were 17½ inches long and just one-sixteenth of an inch wide where they met the ice. Speed skating is a highly technical sport in which competitors want to be able to “feel” the ice and therefore have as little as possible between its surface and the nerve endings of their feet. Davis’s boots, like those of most elite speed skaters, were custom made from molds taken of his feet and surprisingly low-cut — not much higher on his ankles than a pair of Converse canvas sneakers. He wore no socks. He was skating, essentially, on two long knives fastened to a pair of snug-fitting slippers. I stood at the first turn of the 400-meter oval, just on the other side of the protective wall, as Davis whooshed down the straightaway. His

3 Vote(s)

I would like to start off by saying that I am only a casual MMA fan and that I am not some sort of apologist or homer for the sport. I don't have any expertise in martial arts, wrestling or boxing. I do enjoy it and often watch big fights. I also take issue with those who wouldn't call it a legitimae sport. Many in the national media get MMA confused with the movie Blood Sport or professional wrestling leading them to think it is excessively brutal or a joke. That is why many are intrigued by the idea of a fight between Hershel Walker and Jose Canseco. This ignorance is insulting to Hershel Walker and the sport. Hershel Walker the fighter is not a joke. He doesn't fight for the money(in fact he donated the money from his first pro fight to charity) and is properly trained to compete in the sport. Walker won his only pro fight to date. Hershel is passionate about martial arts and responded with anger at Canseco's implication that they should step into the ring. On the other hand Jose Canseco is a complete joke. He wants to turn a legit sport into a side show for his own personal gain. Canseco is a martial artist in the same way Dwight K Shrute and Cosmo Kramer are martial artists. Canseco was beaten in his only pro fight that was a joke or side show at best. I am not even going to bring up his "fight" with Danny Bonaduce because the fact it happen is insulting enough. Canseco is a media whore who is using up any good will he earned by outing steroid users to make a buck anyway he can. I personally never looked kindly upon his ratting out of teammates even though it did help a little in cleaning up the sport of baseball. I think that there is very little that Jose wouldn't do to make money with the exception of getting a real job. Some have drawn comparisons to the spectacle of this fight and the spectacle of Kimbo Slice. While Kimbo is not a skilled fighter I don't think the two are similar in any way.
Michael Jordan, aka ‘The GOAT’, is one competitive dude. Whether it was on a basketball court or in the business world the man just hates to lose. That’s why his current situation will test his business acumen, and his will to succeed in turning the Charlotte Bobcats into a legitimately good team. Jordan has been with the Bobcats in an executive position since 2006, but only this season with Jordan in the position of President of Basketball Operations have the Bobcats finally turned the corner. With a plus .500 record and current seeding of 6th place, the Bobcats finally have a shot at making the playoffs for the first time in their short 6 year franchise history. And what does MJ get for all his hard work in rebuilding the roster and coaching staff in recent years?

2 Vote(s)

The 24th annual Tough Guy Challenge took place last weekend, on Sunday, January 31st, on South Perton Farm, near Wolverhampton, England. Despite being billed as "the safest most dangerous taste of physical and mental endurance pain in the world", this year's race still attracted over 5,000 men and women - all of them signing a disclaimer saying "It's my own bloody fault for being here". About 600 racers did not complete the course this year - the winner being Paul Jones of Oswestry, England, completing the course in one hour 18 minutes. The Challenge is annual event to raise cash for charity with funds going to the Mr. Mouse Farm for Unfortunates. Special thanks today to photographer Mike King, who was kind enough to share 16 of his great photographs of the 2010 Tough Guy Challenge below. (31 photos total)

3 Vote(s)

THEY were strangers just a few weeks ago. But two ordinary Sydney dads yesterday completed an extraordinary journey together, embracing in the middle of a suburban tennis court. Gavin White, 39, and Jeganathan "Jega" Ramasamy, 48, both from Epping, set out on Friday to play the world's longest continuous singles tennis match. Battling shocking heat throughout Saturday, followed by rain, fatigue, sleep depravation and even delirium, the pair were supported by a team of family and friends as they smashed the Guinness World Record by almost an hour . Gavin had placed an ad in the local paper, keen to find a partner to break the previous record of 36 hours and 36 minutes and raise money for the Haitian earthquake victims. Jega was the man who answered the call.Starting at 7pm Friday, they played under lights at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre into a blistering Saturday, when temperatures hit 39.5C, even hotter on court. Then came the afternoon's cool change and the rain of Saturday night and Sunday morning. Finally, at 11:32am yesterday Gavin played a forehand winner down the line and the scorer called "game". It was then the pair agreed to call it quits, having unofficially set a record of 37 hours and 32 minutes, made up of 35 consecutive matches. And out of those 102 sets, Jega's greatest glory came early on Sunday when he won a set tie-break to claim a 7-6 thriller. It was the only set the still smiling father of four won. As emotional families and friends rallied around the pair, Gavin revealed the moment that he had hit rock-bottom. "Some time around 2am I was absolutely delirious," he said. "I thought, 'How can I possibly keep doing this?' because at that stage I was barely able to stand up." But with help from his support team he and Jega played on. Neither had trained for the attempt and Jega said he'd responded to Gavin's ad because he always liked a challenge. "I thought this crazy man; I should join this crazy man," he said, pointing a

3 Vote(s)

With terrorist threats, dire transport links and overspent budgets you'd be forgiven for thinking that the 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But another nightmare scenario has just been added to the Olympic dream – a communications blackout caused by solar storms. After a period of unprecedented calm within the massive nuclear furnace that powers the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a fresh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London. Over the past two years, fewer sunspots have been recorded than at any time since 1913. But now scientists have detected signs that the next cycle has begun and it could peak in two or three years. They believe that this peak in the next solar cycle could generate the eruption of vast solar explosions that could fling billions of tonnes of charged particles towards the Earth, causing intense solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and internet links transmitting live Olympic coverage from London. "The Sun is now waking up. The first significant active regions of a new solar activity cycle are forming. In the last two weeks, we have seen the first major flares of a new cycle," said Professor Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. "The Sun's activity has a strong influence on the Earth. Space weather can affect the whole population. The recipe is right, it's the beginning of a new cycle. The Olympics could be bang in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the transmissions of satellites," he added. Sunspots are the physical manifestation of the Sun's natural fluctuations in magnetic activity which operate on a roughly 11-year cycle. At the peak of the cycle, violent eruptions called coronal mass ejections occur in the Sun's atmosphere, flinging out immense quantities of electrically-charged matter. "A coronal mass ejection can carry a billi

2 Vote(s)
