Former South Africa flanker Ruben Kruger has died from brain cancer at the age of 39. Kruger was a key member of the side that won the World Cup on home soil in 1995, scoring a try in the semi-final against France in Durban. He was named his country's player of the year that season. "Ruben was the epitome of the Springbok flanker; tough and with an outstanding work ethic," said South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins. "When Ruben was on the field you always knew that the Springboks would not be beaten without a tremendous battle. "Our prayers have been with him through his battles against illness and it is very sad to hear of his early passing. "Our thoughts are with his young family and we extend to them our sincerest condolences." The ex-Cheetahs and Bulls forward, who passed away in a Pretoria hospital late on Wednesday, earned 36 Springbok caps after making his debut in 1993 against Argentina in Buenos Aires. He played in the 1995 World Cup final against New Zealand - a game immortalised by Nelson Mandela's appearance in a Springbok jersey. Kruger picked up a serious leg injury against the All Blacks in 1997 and only returned to the Springbok squad for the 1999 World Cup, which would be his swansong because of knee injuries.

5 Vote(s)

The cocktails were flowing as stars filled Sky Bar in the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles Thursday night for VH1’s premiere party for Terrell Owens' new reality show, The T.O. Show. On his show, the controversial Buffalo Bills’ wide receiver looks for love with the help of his two female friends. He admits to cheating on his fiancé and is ready to find the next love of his life. RadarOnline.com was there for the bash, and talked exclusively with T.O. Q: Tell me about your show. A: “It’s been a lot of emotions. It’s a show that started out almost like a dating show. I have two great girlfriends that run my foundation. They’re long time friends of mine and they’re helping find ‘the one.’ You’ll see things that have happened in my past and we address those issues.” Q: What do you think of (former Dallas Cowboy teammate) Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson breaking up? A: “I don’t know. It’s not my problem.” VIDEO: Terrell Owens Unsure Of Reason Behind Fallout With Tony Romo Q: What was it like for you to put yourself out there and do this reality show? A: "I’m not afraid of too much. I know I’m going to have a lot of detractors out there, I’ll have a lot of people that love me." Q: What kind of woman do you like? A: "Someone that’s genuine. I like the overall package. There are some models that really don’t have ass, but they have hips, so it’s all about sex appeal." Q: Any celebs that do it for you? A: "I would say Jessica Biel. She has that appeal. Megan Fox. Angelina Jolie. Honestly, Jennifer Aniston has that look about her as well." Besides the man of the hour, other stars we spotted at the party included Avril Lavigne and So You Think You Can Dance Judge Lil’ C.

5 Vote(s)

After a prep football competition in Tampa, the trip home for a group of Hollywood Hills players was typical as they crossed the state along the rim of Lake Okeechobee: rainy, rural and dark. Then a waving man on the side of the road caught the eye of their coach, who was behind the wheel of their van. Over the course of the next hour, they went from athletes to heroes. The players and their coach rescued a Flagler Beach couple and their granddaughter Sunday night from an SUV, overturned and sinking in a canal along U.S. 27. All three survived the crash, although the grandmother, Juanita Carrillo Bryan, 53, was in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit in Fort Myers on Monday. ''It was something out of a movie,'' said coach Scott Barnwell, a former kicker for the University of Miami Hurricanes. ``I jumped in and found that there were people inside. It was all a blur after that.'' Bryan was unconscious with her head below water when the team, returning from a football tournament at the University of South Florida, saw the flipped Nissan SUV along U.S. 27 outside of Clewiston about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. She was likely saved by the quick actions of Hollywood Hills junior Jared Maldonado, who revived the unresponsive woman with CPR, a skill he learned in school as a ninth-grader. ''At a time like that, it's like not even being in your own body,'' Maldonado said. ``One moment, we're riding back and talking about the two days at USF, and the next thing you know is that you are trying to save lives.'' Maldonado was traveling with Barnwell and teammates Alvin Arnold, Clarence Murphy and Anthony Yerou on a dark, rainy stretch of U.S. 27 when came upon the accident. Along with the man who had flagged them down -- he was another passerby who stopped when he discovered the wreck -- the team began ripping apart the SUV to get to the victims. Minutes before, Bryan had been in the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 with her husband, James Bryan, 56,

3 Vote(s)

One of my favorite all-time stories is about Elvis Grbac (left), Rich Gannon (right) and People Magazine’s Sexiest Men issue from 1998. It is both outlandish and 100-percent true. Back in the day I knew many People staffers, and they were all cool, fun, intelligent—and woefully ignorant about sports. Every year, in planning the Sexiest Men issue, People’s editors would ask a bunch of us at Sports Illustrated for suggestions and insight. In 1998, for a reason I’ll never understand, they decided not to seek out help. The magazine chose Rich Gannon as its Sexiest Athlete. At the time, Gannon was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. Still a couple of seasons removed from his golden tenure with the Raiders, Gannon was 33, handsome and likable. In other words, a solid choice. Yet People, being People, simply informed the photographer assigned to the piece that the Sexiest Athlete was the Chiefs’ quarterback. Hence, he took pictures of the Chiefs’ quarterback. Well, one of the Chiefs’ quarterbacks: Elvis Grbac. Yup. The pictures made their way back to the New York offices, and editors were dumbfounded. This was their Sexiest Athlete? Yet upon learning the truth, no one with the magazine had the heart (guts?) to tell Grbac that an unfathomable mistake had been made. As a result, Elvis Grbac reigns as People’s 1998 Sexiest Athlete. The article’s final line says it all: “His personality makes him sexy.” Amen.

3 Vote(s)

Rugby union would be a terrible game if it ever became totally bland and uncontroversial. Two stirring Heineken Cup semi-finals, however, highlighted three areas that require official scrutiny before the topic of penalty shoot-outs even arises. When it comes to deciding the winners of future drawn contests it already seems more than likely that changes will be made, with a "golden" point the most favoured alternative to the slapstick scenario of specialist forwards kicking penalty goals.More pressing, in my book, are the unholy trinity of dodgy blood substitutions, attempted eye-gouging and increasingly calculated efforts to influence referees. All three, in their own different ways, are a blight on the game and the blood issue, in particular, is becoming a significant problem. From conversations I had over the weekend it would not surprise me if Harlequins are summoned to an official hearing shortly to explain themselves over the quarter-final episode involving Nick Evans's return to the field in the latter stages against Leinster and Leicester's substitution of Julien Dupuy in Cardiff on Sunday also fell into the same unsettling category. For those who weren't paying attention the basic scenario is as follows: in tight games teams are more desperate than ever to get their best kickers on the field even if they have been substituted already. It has reached the point where players stretchered off the field are being marked down on the official sheet as having departed for tactical reasons, simply to offer insurance in the event of subsequent emergencies. The second half of the "sting" involves another player suddenly discovering a graze which would not discomfort a six-year-old, leaving the officials no choice but to agree to him trotting off to the blood-bin, thus clearing the way for the ace marksman to resume. Under Exception 1 of Law 3.12, a substituted player is permitted to return to the field for blood reasons, while a replaced player is not. There are more

3 Vote(s)

Dean Amasinger, 25, a member of Team GB in series 9 of The Ultimate Fighter was heading for a career in rugby until he had a serious knee injury. He believes that many other rugby players will come to mixed martial arts over the next few years, insisting that the skill set, upper body strength, explosive skills, mentality and mindset bear comparison. "I started doing wrestling training at Harlequins, and the strength of the guys going into rugby is very similar to the power needed in mixed martial arts," explained Amasinger, who is one of four British welterweights (170lbs) pitched against a quartet of American counterparts in the series "The mindset is very similar." "I was doing well at rugby and could have potentially been playing professionally now if it hadn't been for the injury. I played at Harlequins academy but had to leave to go to Nottingham University. I then played for the first team at University, as a centre, and still have a connection with rugby today. I train with the Leicester Tigers conditioning coach." Amasinger, half Sri Lankan, half Ethiopian, also trains out of the Rough House Gym, in Nottingham, where several leading British welterweights are now developing, along them Dan Hardy, Paul Daley, and Jimmy Wallhead. More recently, south Londoner Nick Osipczak, also a welterweight on TUF 9, joined the gym. Amasinger is not your stereotypical fighter. Well-spoken, well-educated with a degree in Bio-chemistry, he chose to forego a career in medicine to test himself to the full. But he has always been a natural competitor. While studying at Nottingham University, Amasinger met up with Rough House gym standouts Hardy and Daley, two leading stars of British mixed martial arts. Intrigued by both the training and skill set involved in the world's fastest rising sport, Amasinghe quickly enrolled. Despite losing his professional MMA debut, Amasinger is now enjoying a four-fight win streak and is improving with each and every outing. Boasting alarming

4 Vote(s)

When opposition rugby teams line up against the New Zealand All Blacks, there's a common game plan: Get Carter.Playing as number 10 in the fly half position, Carter is the All Blacks' creative talisman and the one player that can catch the eye with his skill and control a match with his reading of the game.He made his debut for the All Blacks in 2003 at just 21-years-old, but really burst onto the international scene in 2005 during the British Lions tour of New Zealand. It led his opposite number, English fly-half Jonny Wilkinson, who won the World Cup with England in 2003, to call Carter the most complete player in that position, combining great natural talent with an excellent work ethic. As well as the accolades from journalists and fellow players he also picked up the International Rugby Board's Player of the year award in 2005.Growing up around Christchurch on New Zealand's south island, he's been an integral member of the Crusaders team since 2002 and helped to make them t

4 Vote(s)

ALTHOUGH THE gentleman's game was brought from the Old World by immigrants and army officers, it ought to have been killed off years ago by the frozen seasons, the sheer size of Canada and the fierce devotion to winter sports, among which ice hockey reigns supreme. The one thing that can be said of the Canadian lads who run out in Thomond Park this afternoon is that they share an uncommon spirit for the game along with an ability to play it."There comes a time," says Morgan Williams, the distinguished scrumhalf who has been called out of retirement for this tour, "when you have to decide that you really want to pursue rugby. In my case, I felt I had to be in British Columbia in order to play the game after school."In Canada, we have a system akin to the provinces here. But it takes a couple of hours to travel between Munster and Leinster. It takes a four-and-a-half-hour plane ride just to move between Ontario and BC.
